On August 4, 1892, in the small town of Fall River, Massachusetts, Andrew and Abby Borden were discovered dead in their homes. Andrew was killed as he was napping on the downstairs sofa and Abby
was found on the floor of her bedroom. The murder weapon was an axe and the prime suspect was Andrew's daughter, Lizzie. Even though fingerprints were being used to solve cases in Europe, America hadn't yet learned it yet. So even though the bloody axe was discovered, they never used fingerprints to clear or convict. Instead, they used the fact that Lizzie had burnt the dress she wore that day and testimony of neighbors who had seen her do many odd things during the window of a few days around the double murder.
The jury took just 90 minutes to decide that such a good Christian woman could never be involved in a crime like this. Lizzie lived the rest of her life in Fall River. Where she finally died as an old maid in 1927. She did get this cool rhyme made about her:
Lizzie Borden took an axe ,
and gave her mother 40 whacks.
When she saw what she had done,
she gave her father 41.
Take that Jack the Ripper. Of course now the home is haunted and hundreds of visitors have had experiences in the home.
