In the old jail on Amelia Island, Fl, the pirate Luis Aury is still seen here hundreds of years after his death. The pirate was captured and held in the jail as he awaited his hanging. As the crowds gathered, he decided to steal their show and slit his own throat. A doctor was called in and he saved his life with a crude stitching job. Of course, haste makes waste and during his hanging, the stitches tore out and his head was almost ripped off as blood sprayed the screaming crowd.
Now the old jail is the Amelia Island Museum, but the ghosts remain. We went through the Museum one day and spoke with some employees who feel like they are being watched from empty cells. Lights going off and on and cold spots are frequently reported. And the most famous ghost, Luis Aury is still seen with a gaping wound on his throat or heard moaning at the old gallows site.
